The downfall of man came from a single meal from the wrong tree. The ironic thing is that the name of the tree, the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, doesn’t seem like it would be a bad thing to eat from. But it wasn’t a God thing–and the consequences have been devastating for families.
Mankind, now armed with a conscience, used it to replace God’s voice and began living and leaning towards their own understanding. Generations later, we judge family members that aren’t like us, children that don’t do as we wish, and spouses that we can’t control. All without checking in with God about any of it.
Many divorces, going no-contact, restraining orders, disappointments, and heartbreaks later, we are lost unless we come to see family from the vantage point of God’s purpose rather than our own fulfillment.
And what is God’s purpose for family?
God Himself exists in community. The Godhead, Three in One. We get a full illustration of His nature in this Community. Likewise in earthly families, the mandate is to reflect His nature back to Him and to others.
The process begins at salvation, when we enter God’s family, but we have to renew our minds in order to break harmful patterns and replace them with godly ones. We now have to feed from the Tree of Life which produces all the fruits of the Spirit in our lives.
